What is 2205 stainless steel? A brief introduction to a type of “duplex stainless steel”

2025-04-27

In daily life and industrial manufacturing, stainless steel is widely used due to its excellent corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal. But do you know? Stainless steel is not limited to just one type. Among them, 2205 stainless steel, as a representative material of “duplex stainless steel”, is shining brightly in an increasing number of fields with its unique properties.

What is duplex stainless steel?

In simple terms, stainless steel can be classified into several major categories based on its microstructure, such as austenitic type (like 304 and 316), ferritic type, martensitic type, and “duplex type”.
Duplex stainless steel, as the name suggests, is a type of material where both austenite (a face-centered cubic structure) and ferrite (a body-centered cubic structure), two metallographic structures, coexist within the material, each accounting for approximately 50%. This special structure endows it with the performance of combining the advantages of both.

Stainless steel 2205 is precisely the most typical and widely used type among duplex stainless steels.

The main components of 2205 stainless steel

Chromium (Cr) : 22%
Nickel (Ni) : 5% – 6.5%
Molybdenum (Mo) : 3%
It also contains a small amount of nitrogen (N), manganese (Mn) and silicon (Si).

This composition combination endows 2205 with outstanding corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, especially excelling in chlorine-containing environments or Marine engineering.

The characteristics of 2205 stainless steel

1. Strong corrosion resistance
Compared with common 304 and 316 stainless steels, 2205 has stronger corrosion resistance in acidic, alkaline and salt environments, especially having higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion caused by chloride ions.

2. High strength
The yield strength of 2205 is approximately twice that of conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316. It can achieve the same load-bearing effect with thinner materials, thereby saving costs and reducing structural weight.

3. Excellent resistance to stress corrosion
Stress corrosion cracking is a damage mode that many metals are prone to in high-temperature and corrosive environments. 2205 can effectively resist such damage.

4. Good welding performance
Unlike many high-strength materials, 2205 still maintains good solderability, but it is necessary to control the heat input to prevent performance degradation caused by uneven microstructure.

Where is 2205 stainless steel applied?

Due to its outstanding comprehensive performance, 2205 is widely used in the following fields:

– Marine engineering: Seawater desalination equipment, ship structures, submarine oil and gas pipelines
– Oil and gas industry: transportation pipelines, pressure vessels, heat exchangers
– Chemical equipment: reaction towers, storage tanks, pipeline systems
– Construction engineering: Bridge structures, curtain wall systems
– Pulp and Paper industry: Bleaching equipment
– Food processing: Large storage tanks and transmission pipelines

It can be said that in any field that requires high corrosion resistance, high strength, while also caring about service life and safety, the presence of 2205 stainless steel can be seen.

Summary

If one sentence is to be used to describe 2205 stainless steel, it would be: “The king of corrosion resistance among the strong.”
It not only inherits the corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel, but also combines the high strength and crack resistance of ferritic stainless steel, making it an ideal material for various extreme environments.

With the development of industrial technology, the requirements for material properties are constantly increasing. Duplex stainless steels like 2205 will play an increasingly important role in the future.
